Brits 'prepared to build own home'

Brits 'prepared to build own home'The majority of homeowners are open to the idea of building their own property, new research shows.

Figures from Ratedpeople.com reveal that 70 per cent of those Brits already on the housing ladder would consider carrying out such a large-scale home improvement project.

At present, some 20,000 self-build properties - where owners design and construct the building themselves - are made each year.

Ottokar Rosenberger, the firm's sales and marketing director, points out that there "a host of advantages" to carrying out such a DIY project, among them numerous tax breaks.

However, as Mr Rosenberger states that self-builds are time-consuming and need detailed planning, seeking out DIY advice before starting work could well be advisable.

Speaking to the Times last month, the Whellem family from Essex revealed how they purchased a number of rundown farm buildings in France in 2001 transforming them - through self-build - into a number of homes.ADNFCR-2244-ID-19352487-ADNFCR
