    Brits 'plan DIY during retirement'

Brits 'plan DIY during retirement'A significant number of Britons are looking to tackle home improvements upon retiring, new research indicates.

In figures released by Scottish Widows, just over a quarter (26 per cent) of adults claim they plan on carrying out DIY and making property renovations when they are retired.

Meanwhile, many are set to make outdoor improvements to their home as 42 per cent of respondent claims they will spend the newly-acquired free time that retirement gives them in the garden.

Commenting on the figures, Ian Naismith, head of pensions market development for Scottish Widows, states: "It's evident that retirees are spending more time at home and with their families in the wake of the credit crunch."

Older people looking for an effective DIY project may wish to consider improving the exterior of their home as Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, recently claimed that keeping gates and doors well-maintained can not only protect a property against burglars but also increase its overall value.
