    DIY can 'make homes sustainable'

DIY can 'make homes sustainable'Living sustainably and more cheaply is easy with a bit of DIYing, according to the Guardian.

The publication listed ten steps that homeowners could follow to make their houses more eco-friendly.

DIY tasks like insulating the loft and installing double glazing were suggested.

But other ways of keeping out drafts included using heavy curtains and closing them at dusk, and filling gaps in windows and doors that may let heat escape.

The top DIY tip listed was to fix dripping taps and any leaks to stop water wastage.

Fitting motion detectors and timers to lights would also cut the amount of electricity that was used.

Other advice included turning the washing machine down to 30 degrees Celsius and not using half loads.

Colin Dunn, writing for Planet Green, has listed a number of eco-friendly DIY options for homeowners to try in a Green Materials Guide.

They include using flooring that can be easily replaced and pellet stoves instead of gas boilers for heating.
