    Green DIY advice for homeowners

Green DIY advice for homeownersPellet stoves and solar panels are two of the heating options suggested in a Green Materials Guide to make homes more sustainable.

DIY fans may be interested in the eco-friendly suggestions listed in the guide, which is aimed at homeowners who want to increase the sustainability of their property.

Colin Dunn suggests opting for materials that can be partially replaced when adapting homes.

One idea is to use rammed earth, hardwood or cork for flooring as they are options that should "wear beautifully for the life of your home".

Mr Dunn also suggests using rammed earth as building blocks for the home and advises DIYers to install efficient heating options that cut back on energy usage.

Insulation can reduce the amount of heat that is wasted from the home and Mr Dunn suggested using recycled products such as denim and bio-based spray foam.

He remarked that these would "do the job" just as well as traditional roll insulation.

This follows advice by the Guardian on living sustainably, which included DIY tips to make a property more energy-efficient.
