DIY loving Brits 'green their homes'

DIY loving Brits 'green their homes'Helping the environment has become increasingly integral to the DIY projects being carried out by British homeowners, new figures have shown.

According to research from the Co-Operative Bank, households in the UK are spending an average of £251 each year on being eco-friendly - an annual increase of five per cent.

This figure includes money spent by DIYers on items such as energy-efficient boilers and renewable energy appliances.

Chief operating officer at the bank Tim Franklin commented: "This report acts as a timely reminder to political leaders that many people in the UK are working hard to adopt a greener lifestyle."

However, he added that despite the increase in spending on such environmentally-friendly products, less than one per cent of the average total household expenditure is afforded to them - and this needs to grow.

It was announced in chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling's pre-Budget report this week that a boiler scrappage scheme is to be introduced in the UK, with households getting money from the government towards replacing old, energy-inefficient boilers with new ones.
