DIY help for cutting out the coldHomeowners hoping to keep their houses as warm as possible during the cold snap have been given a number of tips on projects they can carry out to beat the freezing temperatures.

According to Graham Henry, writing for the South Wales Echo, making a few home improvements could not only add some much needed comfort to properties, but also save money on energy bills.

He explained that one thing DIYers could do is install loft insulation - just 27cm of padding will save up to £150 on annual fuel bills, he explained.

In addition, insulation will make a big difference to keeping heat in the home and reducing the need to have the radiators on.

Furthermore, cavity wall insulation could also be beneficial and do a similar job, he stated, while fitting a jacket on the water tank is also recommended.

He added that draught proofing is important, as well as fitting double-glazing.

It was recently advised by that homeowners seal gaps in their houses and fix broken drain covers to reduce the risk of rats heading into the property to get out of the cold weather.
