DIYers 'should take advantage of scrappage scheme'

DIYers 'should take advantage of scrappage scheme'Homeowners have been urged to carry out a DIY project where their old boiler is replaced after the government launched its boiler scrappage scheme yesterday (January 5th).

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, 125,000 Brits will be given a grant of £400 if they replace their energy-inefficient, G-rated appliances with new eco-friendly models.

G-rated boilers, the Energy Trust says, are usually those more than 15 years old.

The body stated that this would have the equivalent effect on the environment as taking 45,000 cars off UK roads, while saving householders up to £235 on their fuel bills.

Roger Webb from the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council commented that the programme is "good on many levels" as "householders could see a large reduction in their energy bills, the major carbon savings resulting from replacing inefficient products will help climate change and UK Industry and employment".

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at, recently said that this is a "great scheme".
