DIYers warned that squirrels 'can damage loft insulation'

DIYers warned that squirrels 'can damage loft insulation'People have been warned to keep a close eye out for squirrels getting into homes and damaging loft insulation, by a home improvement writer.

Squirrels commonly enter people's attic spaces and, according to Associated Content contributor Jeanne Heida, can cause a lot of damage inside the home, including impairment to insulation.

Ms Heida says DIYers can easily repair damaged roof spaces by making a temporary patch for the squirrel's access point.

She says a quick and easy repair can be done by using a flexible mesh screen, scissors, brad nails and a hammer.

DIYers should "cut the screen two inches larger than the diameter" and secure this firmly over the hole by simply "hammering in ... brads around the edges".

Ms Heida adds that the "best time of day to repair this opening is during the midday" when squirrels are most likely to be outside.

Earlier this year, Graham Henry of the South Wales Echo noted that households can slash up to £265 off their energy bills by insulating their lofts and attics.
