Older people are best DIYers, suggests survey

Older people are best DIYers, suggests surveyOlder people have the most valuable knowledge when it comes to carrying out DIY at home, according to a survey.

The Birmingham Mail is reporting that a survey carried out by hardware store B&Q found some 33.6 per cent of those under 35 admit to using skills picked up from grandparents when undertaking DIY tasks.

B&Q also found that over 60 per cent of those questioned want to learn more from people over the age of 50 about performing tasks in the home, according to the newspaper.

In response to these findings, B&Q is offering courses which will help people improve their DIY and handiwork skills, giving novice DIYers the chance to try out a host of tools and skills.

The Birmingham Mail claims a number of students have already attended the classes and "have nothing but praise for the idea".

Earlier in the week, comedian and Guardian columnist Shazia Mirza highlighted the money people can save by utilising DIY skills around the home.
