Open fires 'have a number of benefits' for DIYers

Open fires 'have a number of benefits' for DIYersDIY enthusiasts thinking of installing an open fire for their next project have been given a number of tips on how to do so by home improvement expert Jeff Howell.

Writing for the Telegraph, Mr Howell revealed that there are a number of benefits that come with a replacing gas fires with wood-burning equivalents.

Fires of this kind have the ability to help ventilate a property, he explained, while also being a "great way" to avoid condensation problems.

However, he issued a word of warning to those replacing their gas fires and wanting to use the previous alloy flue liner.

"These are too narrow to handle the volume of smoke produced by an open fire, and might also melt due to the heat, as they are made only of thin alloy," he said.

According to the Fireside Shop, open fires could offer economic benefits as well as some potential health advantages, while fuel is readily available for these types of heating systems.
