    Garden DIY on the rise

Garden DIY on the riseMore people are heading to garden stores to pick up the tools they need to keep the grounds of their home looking their best, according to new statistics.

Garden DIY enthusiasts have helped the sale of horticultural tools, such as trowels, spades, shovels and hoes, keep going throughout the snowy winter thanks to their commitment - with the sector growing 2.9 per cent over the past 12 months.

According to GfK Retail and Technology, the value of hand tools was also up 6.8 per cent, with garden centres providing most revenue for the industry as connoisseurs shunned DIY superstores.

"Garden centres are often a place where keener gardeners will shop, due to their more specialist product range," explained researcher Thomas Sowter to Horticulture Week.

However, they may be missing out on expert advice from one particular celebrity.

The Times recently reported that outdoor DIYers will still be able to get assistance from Alan Titchmarsh at B&Q stores after the BBC confirmed his contract with the hardware store was within the organisation's rules.
