DIY projects help Scottish family secure eco award

DIY projects help Scottish family secure eco awardA Scottish family has been recognised for the number of environmentally-friendly DIY projects they have successfully completed in their home.

George and Judith McDermid, who are in their early 40s, won the family category in the Future Friendly Awards after insulating in their loft, installing new cavity wall and boiler insulation and having double glazing fitted, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.

After being named the UK's most eco-friendly family, the McDermid's were awarded a £10,000 prize after revealing they had managed to reduce their gas bills to one-sixth of their previous cost.

Mrs McDermid told the newspaper that her family wasn't expecting to win the prize but that she is "delighted" they have been chosen.

"Sustainability has been a part of our daily lives for many years, but we hope that what we're doing can inspire others to make their own improvements," she commented.

Another Scottish family, the Bairds, were also nominated for the family prize after installing solar panels on their house's roof. They now use the electricity generated to power lighting and various household appliances.

Insulating a loft is one of the more straightforward DIY projects and is particularly important as most heat used in the home escapes through the loft.
