Ideal home is 'more important' than increasing its value

Ideal home is 'more important' than increasing its valueIn news which is likely to interest DIY enthusiasts, a new survey has claimed that the majority of homeowners want to improve their property to make it their ideal home rather than increase its value.

A survey commissioned by the housing charity Shelter and Royal Institute of British Architects has revealed that need for more space and improving the look of their property are the main inspirations for 74 per cent of homeowners.

Added to this, the study discovered that 12 per cent of Britons hope to make their home more environmentally friendly or energy efficient, while a mere eight per cent see increasing its value as a primary concern.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, said: "This survey reveals that homeowners are almost ten times more likely to want to create a better home than merely increase its value, showing that home is so much more to people than just a financial asset."

Meanwhile, Steve Chelton, development manager at Swinton Home Insurance, explained recently that planning a DIY project well in advance is key to ensuring that home improvement work goes smoothly.

Mr Chelton stressed that, rather than rushing to get a job finished over a weekend, it often pays to take some time to see a job through properly.
