DIY expert: Gardens have become home extensions

DIY expert: Gardens have become home extensionsBritons are increasingly using their gardens as an "extension to their house", a DIY expert has claimed.

According to Charlotte Rowe, a leading garden designer and member of the Society of Garden Designers, people are eating outside and cooking outside more.

Ms Rowe, however, insisted that Britons are not using their garden as an outdoor living space.

She added that a garden only takes a few innovative items to make it useful in all weather conditions.

"You can get really fantastic awnings now and really nice parasols, and quite strong large ones - so even if it does rain you have no problems with that," she said.

The British Retail Consortium revealed recently that outdoor DIY sales climbed last month, as an increasing number of consumers acquired leisure and home improvement products in the warm weather.

Retail transaction values grew across the UK with a 1.2 per cent year-on-year rise seen in June, despite the 1.4 per cent increase seen at the same time last year, according to the body.
