House price boost in university towns

House price boost in university towns Almost two-thirds (60 per cent) of university towns have seen house prices rise in the last five years.

The data from Lloyds TSB could inspire more people living in these areas to undertake DIY projects to make their homes more student-friendly.

Figures from the banking group showed that increasing student populations have had an impact on property values.

Aberdeen, for example, has seen house prices rise by 40 per cent over the past five years as the number of students living in the city has shot up by 54 per cent.

Nitesh Patel, housing economist at Lloyds TSB, said: "Growing student numbers have had a big impact in boosting house prices in some university towns – where the increase in demand has led to the local market outperforming the rest of the region."

DIY tasks that homeowners can undertake to make their properties more attractive to students include the installation of double glazing and insulation.

These additions will boost energy efficiency and reduce energy bills for inhabitants.
