Brits spend £235m fixing DIY disasters

Brits spend £235m fixing DIY disastersDIY disasters have cost UK homeowners £235 million to put right in the last year, according to a new survey.

Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank found that almost five million households have messed up at least one of their home improvements in the last 12 months.

If these, half have paid anything up to £500 to fix their own botch jobs.

One quarter said their experience made them wish they had called in the professionals instead.

The findings highlight the need to invest in proper tools when doing DIY.

Those who have never attempted home improvements before may also benefit from doing some research beforehand or carrying out a few practice jobs first.

Steve Reid, retail director at Clydesdale Bank, said: "A home is probably the biggest purchase most of us will ever make so it's important to maintain and protect that investment.

"DIY may seem to be an easy way to save money but without the skills or tools it can end up costing a lot more to put right."
