Personalised DIY projects 'should be encouraged'

Personalised DIY projects 'should be encouraged'Homeowners should not worry too much about how their DIY home improvements will affect the sales value of their home.

This is the advice of Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, who said personalisation should be encouraged.

His comments come after a survey by insurance group LV= uncovered the top interior design crimes of the last 30 years.

Built-in bars, mock fireplaces, artex walls and laminate floors were just some of the DIY projects deemed to be bad taste.

The survey also showed that over half of house hunters would walk away from a property if they came across an interior design faux pas.

But Ms Orme said this doesn't mean homeowners have to stick to neutral or featureless designs when decorating their home.

He explained that most families stay in their homes for many years, so there is nothing wrong with decorating it according to their personal tastes.

"Obviously we all like to see tastefully done projects that meet trends, but ultimately people should make houses into what they want," he remarked.
