Barclaycard reveals rise in DIY expenditure

Rise In DIY Expenditure - lets-do-diy.comPeople are spending an increasing amount of money on DIY, new research reveals.

Figures published by Barclaycard Payment Acceptance indicates that expenditure on DIY and gardening in the four-week period leading up to the Easter weekend was some 18 per cent above that spent during the equivalent length of time last year.

"What we have seen this Easter is people spending their hard earned money on the comforts of home," Stewart Roberts, business development director for Barclaycard, claims.

The firm adds that many people have been taking advantage of the various discounts and sales offered by high street retailers, something which appears to have fuelled their propensity for DIY.

Indeed, splashing the cash on DIY projects appears to be an especially popular pastime as of late, ahead of going away on holiday, as consumer spending on airlines has fallen by 25 per cent on an annual basis.

Meanwhile, Geoff Cooper, chief executive at Travis Perkins - the parent company of DIY retailer Wickes - recently told the Financial Times that people are increasingly looking to attempt DIY projects themselves, resulting in home improvement stores benefiting from an increase in sales.
