Central heating 'has major effect on house prices'

The provision of a central heating system can have a significant impact on a home's overall value, Nationwide research shows.

Plumbing enthusiasts may be interested in recent figures from the building society revealing that a home with full central heating is worth some nine per cent more than an otherwise identical house which lacks such a heating system.

Three years ago, however, this gap stood at seven per cent.

Continuing, the firm points out that although Britons want their homes to be warm there is an increasing awareness of fuel costs and the need to be environmentally responsible.

"This seems to have led to increased efforts to improve energy efficiency and comfort within the home, for example by installing cavity walls and loft insulation," it states, adding that double glazing has become increasingly popular over the past five years.

Looking ahead, it claims that alternative means of creating energy such as solar power cells and ground source heat pumps are set to be increasingly used, although it is currently too early to assess the impact such features could have on property prices.

Those wishing to make their home warmer and more eco-friendly may want to improve their plumbing skills, with single mum Charmaine Warman just one of those doing this.

Speaking to the Daily Mail recently she reveals how she has extended her love for DIY to enrol on a part-time plumbing course.
