DIYers 'should take care when deterring thieves'

Deterring Thieves - lets-do-diy.comPeople need to take care when doing DIY projects.

However, this is not just for their personal safety, but also to ensure their property is not an easy target for thieves.

Citing recent Home Office research, Norwich Union suggests that the number of burglaries taking place this year could be some 50 per cent higher than the 280,000 recorded in 2008.

And while the insurance provider recommends Britons take up home improvements - such as ensuring brickwork is repaired and loose gates are secured - upon doing such work, anything which could be used to gain entry to a home - such as DIY debris, tools and ladders - should be removed.

Pointing out that window and door locks should be used, the firm states that having a well-maintained property and garden can be a "psychological barrier" to would-be burglars.

Earlier this month, Halifax Home Insurance recommended DIY enthusiasts install security lighting in a bid to deter criminals from targeting their home.
