Figures published by the financial services provider reveal that the cost of taking steps to improve fuel efficiency or add energy saving features stands at an average of £1,722.

However, while such outlay may appear costly to some, such home improvements could be a wise investment as it is perceived to boost house prices by an average of £4,327, a return on investment ration of 251 per cent.

Such measures, Lloyds Banking Group commercial director Stephen Noakes points out, could attract property buyers keen on sustainability.

Mr Noakes goes on to claim that it "will also help to reduce heating bills and improve a home's energy efficiency, a report on which is part of the home information pack".

One eco DIY project homeowners may wish to consider is garden lighting, as Katrina Burroughs wrote in a recent Sunday Times article that such products are becoming increasingly environmentally friendly.
