DIY tips for 'exciting solar power developments'

DIY tips for 'exciting solar power developments'DIY lovers who have a green streak have been given advice about new progress made in solar power technology by Solarcentury.

Research by the Georgia Institute of Technology recently suggested that using optical fibres could be more efficient than the solar panels that currently exist on many homes worldwide.

With a larger surface area, the fibres could convert more of the sun's light into power, while being much smaller than panels, they may potentially take up less room on a roof.

Charlotte Webster, head of public relations at Solarcentury, commented that the developments were "exciting" due to the importance of solar power to the country's carbon reduction targets.

However she added that despite this, homeowners and DIY enthusiasts should think carefully about the devices used and not necessarily get rid of panels altogether, as they already do a good job.

She believes "the technology that's out there at the moment is robust, efficient and proven enough to be able to meet the targets that [the] EPIA (European PhotoVoltaic Industry Association) suggests."
