Home energy efficiency urged ahead of EU certificate launch

Home energy efficiency urged ahead of EU certificate launch Homeowners have been advised to consider making their properties more energy efficient ahead of new energy certificates coming into effect.

New legislation from the EU will make it compulsory to include information on a house's energy efficiency ratings in sale advertisements.

This could inspire more people to undertake DIY projects to install double glazing, insulation or other energy-saving products.

Martin Russell Croucher, head of sustainability at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, explained: "The move will make [energy performance certificates] a more formal part of the decision-making process for home buyers.

"It will make it easier for them to compare 'like for like' and could deter them from viewing homes that have poor energy efficiency ratings."

Home improvements recommended by the organisation include insulating hot water pipes, sealing windows and doors to prevent draughts, changing boilers and installing cavity wall and loft insulation.

Such DIY projects can improve energy efficiency as well as reduce energy bills.
