Homeowners urged to carrying out DIY water saving improvements

Homeowners urged to carrying out DIY water saving improvementsHomeowners have been advised to carry out a few DIY home improvements that will help them conserve water.

To coincide with the Energy Saving Trust's Energy Saving Week, the Consumer Council for Water is encouraging families to look carefully at how much water they are using and think about how they could cut back.

The group points out that households on water meters can save considerable amounts by reducing their consumption, while those who are still charged rates can see a reduction on their energy bills.

Indeed, around three-quarters of a home's energy use relates to heating and hot water in baths, showers and washing machines, it states.

Dame Yve Buckland, chair of the organisation, listed a number of steps homeowners can take to avoid wasting water unnecessarily.

She recommended replacing worn washers on leaky taps and insulating the hot water cistern to keep it hot for as long as possible.

Changes in behaviour can also help. For example, spending less time in the shower and making sure the dishwasher is full before switching it on can generate considerable water savings.
