Small DIY projects 'boost home energy efficiency'

Small DIY projects 'boost home energy efficiency'Even small DIY projects can have a big impact on a home's energy efficiency, it has been claimed.

Michael Holmes, a spokesman for the National Home Improvement Show, said that while fitting double glazing and installing new boilers can cuts hundreds off pounds of energy bills, little changes can also make a huge difference.

He advised DIY enthusiasts to fix any dripping taps in their property, claiming this could save as much as 5,000 litres of water a year.

The expert also recommended installing a water displacement device in the toilet, as 30 per cent of a home's overall water consumption comes from the loo.

"Finally, don't forget that energy saving light bulbs cost as little as £3 and can save you up to £40 per year," he added.

Last month, a survey carried out by moneysupermarket.com showed that up to five million people in the UK could be living in fuel poverty, although many are unaware of it.

The price comparison website noted that installing insulation to prevent heat from escaping the home is one of the best ways of reducing energy bills.
