Boris encourages future generation of outdoor DIYers

Boris encourages future generation of outdoor DIYersSchoolchildren are being encouraged to hone their outdoor DIY and gardening skills, as a competition receives the backing of Boris Johnson.

The mayor of London has thrown his support behind a competition organised by the Capital Growth organisation. Some 2,300 primary schools have been invited to take part.

Entrants are being urged to create an outdoor space which either focuses upon biodiversity, the recycling of waste or the changing climate.

Prizes include a visit from a celebrity gardener and cash prizes of £500.

Mr Johnson said he saluted the "top notch work taking place by green fingered teachers and pupils across the capital".

He added that he wished to see the "growing appetite for locally grown food" increase and that more schools should be brought "into the Capital Growth fold".

Capital Growth is a campaign group which advises people on how they can utilise green outdoor spaces and rooftops to create spaces for food growing.
