People often neglect their gardens during winter, but by carrying out a few simple DIY projects they could actually brighten them up for the cold months ahead.According to the Society of Garden Designers, one of the first things to do is invest in some winter bedding plants, such as pansies.Spokesman Thomas Hoblyn said pansies will flower all winter and seem to thrive in the British climate."One thing that is very important to remember with pansies is that they are voracious feeders and need fertiliser," he remarked.Keen gardeners could construct their own raised beds for their winter flowers, or invest in some window boxes and hanging baskets.Once Christmas has been and gone, Mr Hoblyn recommended planting bulbs among the bedding plants, starting with snowdrops. He also suggested using fragrant blooms such as daphne and witch hazel, especially near doors and windows where the smell will be best appreciated.Posted by Jenny Summer
