More DIY 'is a good thing'

More DIY 'is a good thing'British homeowners are increasingly taking up traditional home pursuits such as DIY projects and gardening as the country returns to money-saving ways, according to a design commentator.

Jonathan Glancey, reporting for the Guardian, explained that a recent surge in sales of Lego reflects a wider trend amongst recession-hit consumers to rediscover an interest in past times.

In many cases, the move towards 'grow your own' and DIY projects is enabling UK households to offset increasing financial pressures.

"This, surely, can only be good both in the immediate and long term," added Mr Glancey.

Last month, Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q, Britain's largest DIY chain, released an optimistic update on its recent sales.

Figures revealed that sales at B&Q had risen by 0.7 per cent on a like-for-like basis - ahead of city forecasts predicting just a three per cent increase and reflecting UK consumers' strengthening interest in DIY and home improvement.ADNFCR-2244-ID-19319607-ADNFCR
