Beware threat of burglars, students advised

Beware threat of burglars, students advisedStudents are being advised to take measures to ensure they do not fall victim to a burglary, it has emerged.

Undergraduates keen on DIY could be particularly interested in research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance revealing that the typical student holds belongings worth an average of £3,548 within their student accommodation.

With such items ranging from DVD players and digital cameras to bicycles and laptops, the firm points out that student accommodation could offer "rich pickings for any opportunist burglar".

As such, undergraduates are advised to ensure that they have adequate locks in place and that all windows and doors are secured when vacating the premises, guidance those keen on home improvements may wish to follow up.

Earlier this month, Ratedpeople.com urged people to upgrade their burglar alarm and increase the number of locks fitted on external doors.

In addition, the firm recommended the installation of security lighting and double-glazed windows as means of guarding a property against burglars.
