DIY Britons given advice to save money

DIY Britons given advice to save moneyDIY enthusiasts have been offered some useful advice to upgrade their home while minimising cost.

Writing for Housing Watch, Katie McCaskey insisted that a fabulous and inexpensive renovation begins with the "clarity of your plan".

It pays to map out your entire DIY project before you begin, according to Ms McCaskey, who explained that this helps to reduce waste.

"A 3-D floor plan will help you to adhere as closely to your budget as possible," she said.

"Visualize specific floorplans in three dimensions by using free, web-based applications."

She added that another common way homeowners can save money is by changing their mind midway.

Ms McCaskey warned that some items can be non-returnable, non-refundable and cannot be easily sold second hand.

Sticking with your initial plan also has the added advantage of facilitating better choices when options present themselves, she said.

Meanwhile, Melanie Griffiths, assistant editor at Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, insisted recently that Britons' passion for DIY projects has not decreased at all.
