DIY expert offers advice to help keep cool in summer

DIY expert offers advice to help keep cool in summerA DIY expert has issued some advice to homeowners seeking to keep cool this summer.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Jeff Howell identified ventilation as the key to remaining comfortable in stifling temperatures.

To achieve this, Mr Howell advised DIY enthusiasts to open roof windows, loft hatches and windows downstairs.

"If flies are a problem when you leave the windows open, install sliding alloy secondary glazing," he remarked.

"In the summer I take out some of the glass sashes and have had fly screens made an identical size."

Further to this, Mr Howell explained that solid brick houses are cooler than lightweight timber-frame structures, because of the thermal mass.

This follows claims made recently by Carolyn Muse-Grant, in an article for lvrj.com, that DIY enthusiasts need not "sacrifice good looks for comfort" this summer.

Ms Muse-Grant explained that the hottest season of the year is when "contemporary design really shines".
