DIY saves a fortune, says comedian

DIY saves a fortune, says comedianDIYers undertaking small jobs at home are saving a fortune, according to a comedian.

In a column for the Guardian, DIY novice Shazia Mirza discussed her own do it yourself experience and highlighted how even taking responsibility for the most basic tasks at home will save the public money.

Ms Mirza, who admitted she was terrified of DIY tools, said during a recession "compromises need to be made".

She decided to fix her leaky kitchen taps after she discovered getting "someone in to fix (them) would cost ... £100".

After fixing the problem, Ms Mirza jokingly said she was concerned everything had run "too smoothly" and admitted she "couldn't quite believe it was working".

Last week, UK homeowners were advised that undertaking DIY tasks across the home could help keep rats and other pests at bay.

Advisers from Confused.com told Brits to make sure all holes and crevices were sealed to ensure unwanted visitors remained outside of the house.
