Older Brits 'possess greater DIY knowledge'

Older Brits 'possess greater DIY knowledge'Older people are significantly more capable at DIY, new research shows.

In a study carried out by B&Q, some 2,500 Britons were quizzed on their ability to carry out home improvements tasks and if they have ever been asked for help by their relatives.

Four-fifths of those over the age of 50 were shown to be able to rewire a plug, although this falls to three-fifths of 18 to 35-year-olds.

The study also reveals that a third of young people have turned to their grandparents for DIY advice, with tasks such as bleeding radiators and wallpapering proving to be areas of difficulty for such consumers.

Commenting on the research, Andrew Harrop of Age Concern states: "Clearly when deciding who to get help from, people make their decisions based on ability rather than on age."

Meanwhile, Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, recently claimed people are increasingly attempting to do home improvements themselves in a bid to save money.
