    Women's Institute launches DIY initiative

Women's Institute launches DIY initiativeThe Women's Institute (WI) plans to train its members to become more proficient in DIY chores in an attempt to challenge gender stereotypes, the Daily Mail reports.

The WI has invited a leading hardware store to teach its members the basics of home improvement and 75 ladies will soon take part in the first DIY teaching class at Denman College, Oxford.

Apprentices of the store will teach the women how to fix plumbing appliances, apply wallpaper and how to use power tools.

Anne Harrison, the chairman of Denman College, explained that although 21st century women are more independent than ever, many are still unable to fix relatively minor problems.

"It will be wonderful to know you don't have to wait for a man," she told the newspaper.

"You can also save money by being able to do simple five-minute jobs around the house rather than paying someone to come in."

The Women's Institute provides a programme of monthly meetings and demonstrations for its members.
