Home improvers looking for DIY dividends

Findings from the annual Halifax Home Improvements Survey highlight the growing numbers of homeowners who recognise that DIY can add value to their property.

The independent research carried out on behalf of the Halifax - the UK's largest mortgage lender - showed that 28% of the people surveyed were planning to carry out home improvements in the next twelve months. Of this number almost half (44%) believe the work undertaken would add up to £5,000 to the value of their property, while over one in ten (12%) expected an increase in value of between £10,000 and £25,000.

The survey found that the most popular home improvements are:

    1. Redecorating
    2. Garden improvements
    3. New furnishings
    4. New carpets
    5. Laminate/wood flooring
    6. New bathroom

But environmental concerns also seem to be having a greater influence on the type of jobs being carried out, as one in five (17%) of the people surveyed have introduced energy efficiency measures into their homes.

The survey also showed clear evidence that more and more young people are getting involved in home improvements and DIY with almost three quarters (74%) of home owners aged between 18-34 claiming to have carried out work on their property in the last twelve months. This is up two-thirds (68%) from the previous year.

But DIY also seems to be retaining its position as one of the nation's most popular past times with almost one in six people (14%) asserting they carry out home improvements for their own  enjoyment.
