Homeowners 'need to reduce burglary risk'

Reduce Burglary Risk - lets-do-diy.comTaking the time to tackle a number of outdoor DIY projects could prove to be an effective way of making a property more secure, it has been claimed.

And now could be an ideal time to do so as Direct Line reveals that some 800,000 properties fall victim to burglars each year, with August and June the two months which recorded the most number of claims for such crime.

However, in an effort to prevent this from happening the firm advises that sheds and gates should be kept locked at all times, as head of home insurance Andrew Lowe states that "householders can do several things to minimise the risks of being burgled when they are away from the home".

Indeed, consumers were urged to make sure all windows and doors are locked, those looking for DIY advice could be interested to hear.

But despite homes being at particular risk, many homeowners are not taking security precautions, with 83 per cent failing to lock their valuables away in a safe when going on holiday.

Meanwhile, Saga recently urged older people in particular to take steps to ensure their property is secure before going on holiday.
