Nationwide reveals effectiveness of DIY improvements

Effectiveness Of Home Improvement - lets-do-diy.comThe effect that DIY projects can have with regards to boosting property values has been unveiled in a new report.

Research by Nationwide shows that in expanding floor space ten per cent, the price of the average house increases by around five per cent.

If such a home improvement project was carried out in a detached property its value would rise by almost seven per cent.

The provision of a loft conversion which sees an additional bedroom and bathroom be fitted can add as much 20 per cent on to the value of the average home.

However, Martin Gahbauer, chief economist for Nationwide, states that the location remains the largest factor which will affect the value of a home, although other characteristics "also have a significant influence on the desirability - and thus price - of property".

And it appears that more people are concentrating on DIY as Grand Designs Magazine editor Claire Barrett recently claimed that more people are looking to fit new bathrooms and kitchens as a means of investing in their property during the economic downturn.
