Writing in the Independent, Graham Norwood claims that those who opt for an interior design which heavily reflects their individual tastes could find this ends up being "a turn-off" for prospective buyers when the home is put on the market.
"Neutral ivory or white in a classic modern or period style is always the safest bet," Richard Barber, of estate agent WA Ellis, points out.
He adds that prospective property buyers are looking for high-quality features when searching for a home to purchase rather than "gimmicky improvements".
The publication goes on to cite assertions by estate agents and other property experts that home improvements aimed at increasing the marketability of a property for sale should focus on neutral colour schemes and de-cluttering.
Such claims come as Emma Jones, founder of Enterprise Nation, wrote in a recent Independent blog that decorating enthusiasts looking to set up a home office should use soft shades of green and blue for such a room's interior.
