According to National Home Improvement Council director Andrew Leech, those Britons over the age of 50 are likely to find painting and decorating, as well as other forms of home improvement, are things they can do themselves.
However, he points out this all depends on the scale of the project they are looking to tackle, meaning that obtaining DIY advice before picking up tools and building materials could well be recommended.
Indeed, Mr Leech suggests that older people may want to get help before tackling particularly major home renovation plans, such as fitting a new kitchen or bathroom.
His comments come as a recent study by Saga shows that around one in ten of those over the age of 50 have attempted a large-scale home improvement project.
Meanwhile, 31 per cent have injured themselves while doing DIY.
