    Young people lack DIY skills

Young people lack DIY skillsToday's younger generations lack basic DIY skills, with half of those under the age of 35 admitting they do not know how to wire a plug.

According to a survey by Halifax Home Insurance, some 54 per cent of people in this age group can't bleed a radiator and would call on someone else to help.

It would most likely be dad, as 65 per cent of respondents said their fathers are better at DIY than they are.

The research shows that while many younger homeowners lack the knowledge to carry out basic home maintenance, others don't even want to try.

Indeed, 45 per cent of those questioned said they wouldn't attempt to put up shelves, while 63 per cent wouldn't give wallpapering a go.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said that by adopting this attitude, today's under-35s could be creating more work for themselves.

"A significant number of younger householders could be storing up problems for the future, as the lack of home maintenance starts to take its toll on their homes," he explained.

Meanwhile, experts at this year's National Home Improvement Show have identified a growing trend in the DIY sector, with more women getting out their tools and carrying out projects by themselves.
