Lighting 'can help to expand hallway space'

Lighting 'can help to expand hallway space'Lighting can be an effective way of making hallway and stair space feel bigger, it has been suggested.

In a Guardian article, Lucy Martin, design director of John Cullen Lighting, points out those looking to tackle such home improvements should pay particular attention to the first landing - if it is visible from the front door - and use corner-mounted lighting to draw the eye up the stairs.

Speaking in a response to a reader's question, Ms Martin claims that lighting should be used "to direct attention to points of interest - a mirror, a painting or the stairs themselves".

However, home improvement enthusiasts could be interested to hear her point that downlights should not be used in a hall as these can create "a tunnel effect".

She also suggests that light artworks can help to make a hall appear wider.

In comments made to the Daily Telegraph earlier this month, Ms Martin stated that with regards to lighting a kitchen, DIY enthusiasts should focus on quality rather than quantity.ADNFCR-2244-ID-19326684-ADNFCR
