Despite having a lack of eyesight, one young man is proving to be adept at plumbing.
Robert Ainsley-Raffel is currently studying for a level one plumbing qualification at Doncaster College, despite being blind since birth.
Mr Ainsley-Raffel, who lives in the Bircotes area of the town, reveals how he uses a variety of specially-adapted tools – including a Braille ruler and a talking tape measure – to assist him with such home maintenance work.
“Although ideally plumbers need their eyesight, it isn’t essential and hopefully I can have a career in the industry,” the 23-year-old tells the Star, adding that he is looking to further improve his DIY skills by progressing on to the next level on the course.
Meanwhile, recent research by Halifax revealed that the average cost of renovating a bathroom stands at £3,000, with around a fifth of home improvers opting to carry out such a project.
