Caring for your wooden furniture

Updated:29th June 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Wooden furniture is fantastic for adding beauty and style to your home. Not matter what the style of wood you’ve gone for, it’s bound to add elegance to your surroundings.

The only thing that has to be considered when opting for wooden furniture is that it requires a lot of care and attention in order for your furniture to last for generations to come. The simple steps below should help you with simple solutions and guidelines to making your furniture stay looking great for longer.

Stains

We’ve all been there – when a child scratches your dining room table with their toy or a well-meaning adult accidentally knocks over their drink onto your wooden coffee table. You don’t have to worry any longer, one of the best attributes of wood furniture is that it is simple to touch up and return to its original beauty.

For those small marks and scratches, a scratch cover product from your local B&Q & is usually enough to cover up these little marks without any further hassle and for those larger scratches, try using a felt tip pen or shoe polish in a color closely matched to the finish of the furniture piece, you’ll be surprised how good these can be at covering up those dints.

Water spots can be very unsightly marks on your wooden furniture but there is a way to get rid of these as well. Make sure you allow the marks to dry completely and then rub real mayonnaise onto it with a soft cloth, do this until the spots disappear.

Prevention Tips

Some damage that can’t be mended is sun damage – this can really ruin the effect of your furniture for good. In order to prevent serious damage to your wood furniture, it’s essential that you don’t position it in direct sunlight. The sun can have a drying influence on wood and can leave it looking very dry and weathered. Remember to protect it from even when it’s not in use by always covering it with an inexpensive table pad.

Another useful prevention tip is to always remember to use a tablecloth or placemats to protect the finish of a wood table when having a meal, especially when serving hot food.

Cleaning

Polishing wooden furniture once a week can go a long way to protecting the finish from damage and helping your furniture pieces look their best. It’s important to get a good quality polish though as any polish that contains silicone, alcohol or ammonia can do permanent damage to your items. An excellent polish can actually be easily made at home, by simply combining lemon oil with 3 parts olive oil.

The above tips can really help you to look after your furniture but try not to be too disheartened if you are unable to make a scratch small stain disappear completely. Signs of use and the odd nick can actually add character to pieces of wooden furniture and are often not as obvious as you’d think.
