As the autumnal weather arrives in the UK, consumers appear to be turning their attention towards home improvements.
According to the latest high street sales figures from accountants and business advisors BDO, sales of homewares jumped substantially in September.
The market saw growth of 10.2 per cent compared to the same month last year, when the UK was in the midst of a late Indian summer.
BDO suggested the cooler weather this year may have been responsible for the boost, as consumers prepare to spend more time indoors.
Sales of big ticket items like large furniture pieces were particularly strong as consumers looked to beat January's VAT increase by making purchases now.
The publication of the figures comes after James Max, a qualified chartered surveyor, suggested that now is a great time to do DIY home improvements.
He pointed out that in a difficult housing market, homes that are well decorated and professionally renovated will sell ahead of neglected properties that need additional work.
