DIY enthusiasts have been warned that safety should be the number one priority when making home improvements, WLS Chicago News reports.
According to John Drengenberg, consumer safety director for Underwriter Laboratories, a first aid kit must be nearby during DIY projects.
The first aid kit should be easy to carry, securely locked and quick to open, Mr Drengenberg said.
Added to this, he urged DIY enthusiasts to dress appropriately, recommending the use of safety goggles but warning against wearing watches, bracelets or long sleeves.
This follows claims made recently by LV= that thousands of homeowners are undertaking projects involving electrics or plumbing without professional help.
In addition, close to a million people in the UK have attempted major building works, while more have carried out structural work, the insurance provider said.
LV= warned that failure to do jobs correctly could lead to a reduction in the value of a property, while it may also impact upon home insurance policies.
