DIYers should aim to be resourceful and re-use materials during big projects, according to an enthusiast.
Michelle Beschen, writing for Scripps Howard News Service, says she cringes when home improvement shows on the television make "entertainment out of careless deconstruction".
She has urged DIYers to show "a sense of resourcefulness" and notes that it can often prove "amazing to see the amount of material that can be salvaged and reused".
Ms Beschen adds that, despite being a DIY enthusiast all her life, she still gets "blown away … by fulfilment" when undertaking a big project by herself.
Such words were recently echoed by Sian Berry, a Guardian columnist and greener lifestyle expert, who says that undertaking DIY tasks can provide people with a huge sense of pride.
Research from Rated People has this week suggested that DIY projects will be on the rise in 2010 as homeowners look to add value to their properties rather than move home.
