DIYers have been warned to make sure they are aware of the location of all pipes and wires in the home before undertaking projects.
Home improvement blogger Benedict Yossarian, writing for Flip Gain, has warned people they could quadruple their workload or cause unnecessary damage by hammering nails into the wrong places.
Mr Yossarian says that wires and pipes are often "considerably damaged by wayward nails" and that DIYers must always be aware of where such potentially troublesome areas can be located.
He also highlights electrical installations, fuse boxes and insulation materials as pre-existing household items that can often be damaged as a result of badly managed DIY.
Last week (January 28th), DIYers were urged to be resourceful and re-use old materials by Michelle Beschen of the Scripps Howard News Service.
Research from Rated People has suggested that the number of DIY projects being undertaken by homeowners will show a notable increase over the next year.
