Those looking to expand the amount of space they have in their property should approach this kind of home improvement with caution.
Although an extension can boost the overall value of a home – particular when extra bedrooms are added – homeowners should first research how much their neighbouring properties are worth, the Independent reports.
Sharon Zaremski, of estate agency Strutt & Parker, states that if the majority of homes in an area “are selling for no more than £500,000, then sticking a £100,000 extension on the side and expecting the house to be worth £600,000 is completely unrealistic”.
Meanwhile, Robert Bailey, of Robert Bailey Property, claims that such a DIY project should incorporate windows.
He states that despite a recent trend for multi-storey subterranean basements, they have “limited appeal” and that buyers do not place as much value on basement rooms “nearly as much as light-filled space”.
However, Antony and Rachel Faretra recently told the Daily Telegraph that a basement extension has proved effective in increasing the amount of room for their family, as the home improvement project saw them add a utility room, office and playroom.
