DIY enthusiasts have been told they do not need a garden to grow their own flowers or fruit and veg.
According to Liz Murphy, associate editor at House Beautiful magazine, homeowners do not need to have any outside space in order to "enjoy growing flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit".
"Pots and planters can fit on a small patio or balcony, window boxes can brighten up a windowsill, and hanging baskets work on the outside of flats as well as houses," she said.
A hanging basket is a good way to attract butterflies literally to your doorstep, according to Ms Murphy, who also insisted that fruit and vegetables can look almost as good as flowerbeds in hanging baskets.
This follows claims recently made by letting agents Belvoir that even the smallest of outside areas can add another dimension to a living space.
A well thought out and well-maintained front garden can make a big difference to first impressions, Belvoir said.
