Hi,

Please help - I know nothing about electrics...

From the beginning.... I recieved a letter from Southern Electric saying that there was a problem with my meter, that there was a fault with it charging at the wrong rate. Immersion heater worked fine before then - but now won't... ThumbDown The light is still on the switch to turn it on and off so I guess there is power still getting to it.

Any ideas??? Is it Southern Electrics fault? ThumbsUp Has the new meter blown something in the heater? How can I tell? Should it do that? Or do I have more worrying electric problems??

Any advice would be helpful...

(it's a big yellow tank with one immersion element in the front of the tank - the element says it's HeatRae Sadia)

Hey Sarah,

I think this might just be a coincidence

You'll need a plumber out to see the fault on the immersion heater and whether its repairable or needs replacing.

here are a number of possible problems.

1) Do you have storage heaters? If you do, you have a meter with separate day and night sections. The immersion heater is set to the night meter and will only come on at night.

2) Is the heater on a timer? Changing the meter will have reset the timer to midnight. You need to correct the time.

3) If the answer to both is no, the water heater is faulty. The usual culprit is the thermostat that's built into the water heater.

Changing the meter wouldn't have caused the problem - it's just coincidence. Since you know nothing about electrics, you'd better get in someone who does.

Hope this helps!

With the light still on power is clearly getting there, so it's nothing they've done. Probably the thermostat, though it might be the element itself. Best get a sparky or plumber in rather than fiddle.
